
Mitsubishi Motors, part of the larger Mitsubishi Group, first entered car production in 1917 via its shipbuilding division but halted due to high costs. After merging with its aircraft division in 1934, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries resumed car production for the military in 1937. Post-WWII, it was split into three entities. In the 1960s, Mitsubishi entered the Japanese mass-market with the 500 sedan and partnered with Chrysler, which helped bring Mitsubishi models to the U.S. under different names.
